Week 2!!!
Oh my goodness...I can't believe I've just finished my second week of full time student teaching! Stepping into this full time experience has really opened my eyes to so many different things, and it just keeps getting better everyday. But, everything has its bad times right? Needless to say, I have not been this tired in my whole life. Teaching definitely takes a lot out of you, but it's all worth it in the end. I would rate my overall week as a 4, because I still have some areas to work on but I feel like I'm slowly but surely acclimating to the "teacher life."
This week started off as a weird week where my CE was out of town for a BETA trip on Monday and Tuesday, so they decided just to leave me in the classroom without a sub. Needless to say, those two days were definitely eye opening. Since most of the 7th grade students were gone on the BETA trip, we just combined the kids that we have into 2 classes so I got an extra planning period (whoop whoop!) I was able to review some of the areas that the students were struggling with and have a more one-on-one conversation with them to figure out what they know and what they don't know.
My goal for this coming week is to successfully teach and video my edTPA lessons. I've been preparing for these for weeks now and I feel confident in my lesson plans. I'm praying that all the lessons play out as planned, and everything goes smoothly.
I was able to practice standard 1b this week, teachers demonstrate leadership in their schools. I was able to meet with other 7th grade math teachers and people from HR to talk about the different things that are going on within our classrooms. During this PLC I was able to voice my opinion and tell them what I have observed in my classroom involving the different materials that we are required to teach.
I exhibited standard 2d, teachers adapt their teaching for the benefit of students with special needs. Differentiation is a hard thing for me to do, especially having no student with an IEP or 504. But, I have come to the realization that just because students don't have a IEP or 504 doesn't mean that they learn the same way as the other students. So this week one of my students could not understand how to add and subtract positive and negative numbers, so I pulled her aside and tried to explain to her the different rules and the difference between multiplying, dividing, adding, and subtracting positive and negative numbers. I was able to print her off a rules sheet to keep in her Interactive Notebook so she can go back for future reference.
For standard 3a, teachers align their instruction with the NCSCOS. As I planned for next week I was able to align each of my lesson plans with the NCSCOS.
For standard 4e, teachers help students develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. I am able to challenge my students to do this by constantly asking them "Why?" This allows for them to sit there and think through what we are learning and how it can be applied to many different things. I usually ask my students, "What is a situation where you could apply this?" This allows for the kids to not only think through what we just learned, but also how it can be applied to their everyday lives.
For standard 5a, teachers analyze student learning. I was able to look and compare my students MAP scores from fall to winter. I was able to see if they grew and how much growth they did. I was also able to see which areas in particular did they grow in. This allows me to see what I need to work on, and how it will affect my lessons for the following days.
Overall this week was pretty good and I can only hope and pray that this next week will go just as smooth. I hope everyone has a greatttttt week!!!

Alanna, Glad to see you are becoming a leader more and more in your PLC! Keep documenting these artifacts for my review when I come to observe. I am also glad to see you are being more intentional with asking "why?" - keep building your students' critical thinking skills!
ReplyDeleteWow! Thats awesome you were able to stay in your classroom without a sub! Also, I know that extra planning period was great! I completely agree about being tired. Who knew teaching could be so exhausting. It sounds like you are making great strides in your classroom. Good luck as your teaching continues!
