Craziest Week Ever

This week was one word....CRAZY! With no school on Monday, and being slammed with snow Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday we only got one full day of instruction which put our plans WAY behind, but all we can do is work with what we got. Since we only got one full day of instruction I did take advantage of it and was able to assist a lot during my 1st and 3rd blocks and teach my 2nd block for the entire period of the time. Starting Monday I will be taking over 1st and 2nd block which are both my 7th grade Plus classes so I am really excited to jump into this process and being so close to starting my 10 weeks of student teaching.

Overall I would rate this week a 2.5, it wasn't too too bad but it also was not the best week. With all this testing approaching and us already being behind with the pacing, it's really frustrating that we are having all these school days out. But, if I learned one thing so far in student teaching it is you just have to go with things sometimes, nothing is ever set in stone. Next week my CE has to go and give the EOC for our 8th graders, so this means I will be in there with my 1st and 2nd block by myself. I am very exciting that I have this opportunity to have the feeling of this being "my class" but it's frustrating with how behind we are so I am going to have to take advantage of every minute of instructional time that I am given.

For standard 1 (NCPTS), I was able to sit in on a meeting where they were talking about the SIP and the different goals that they are trying to reach this school year and next school year. This meeting was very beneficially to be in, and I was able to learn a lot about my school. For standard 2 (NCPTS), I was able to sit down with my CE and talk about the different problems that are going on within my classroom, with my kids and the different things that they are going through and what we can do as a team to make them feel more than welcomed when they walk through our doors. Since this week I was able to teach my 2nd block I really had to exercise standard 3 (NCPTS), and really dive in and practice the content I'm teaching. This was hard for me to do because at first I'm thinking "I'm going to be a math teacher, I should know 7t grade math already, right?" but it's been so long since I have done some of these things that I have to go back and reteach myself, so this standard has really came into play this week. For standard 4 (NCPTS), I was able to plan my first full week of lesson for 2 of my classes for next week. I know I will have to make some changes to them now, since all of the snow days, but I have learned that you just have to adapt to the situations...that's a part of teaching. Lastly, for standard 5 (NCPTS), after I taught on Tuesday I was able to sit down with my CE and reflect on the lesson I taught and how I can improve. This helped a lot because it showed me where my weakness was and then I had to figure out how I could fix it.

For my portfolio, I have started my resume and and still working on my website. Having the portfolio tracker has been really beneficial with going through this process.

Hope everyone had a good restful week, and I will see all of y'all tomorrow!!

  1. Alana, I know what you mean about the crazy week. We also only had 1 day of instruction. Now, we are going to spend the week playing catch-up, while trying to cram in new material. Our students have benchmarks next week so we are really stressing. It's great that you are starting to pick up classes and will even have them by yourself some. Good luck, and have a great week!

  2. Some weeks just don’t work out as planned. This was clearly evidenced by last week! I am glad to see you were able to participate in the SIP meeting. Now...be purposeful to collect data with how you are positively impacting the SIP. Let’s hope for no more snow!
